Live at the Ugly Mug Café
September 2005
Not sure why the band chose to begin their CD with the acapella tune Anachy as it is not as impressive as the rest of their recording. Personally, I enjoy this trio’s blend of vox when accompanied by the sounds of acoustics. Perhaps the choices were made due to the live recording. Generally, an upbeat tune is my preference for a first song.
Made up of Donna Creighton, Amber Cunningham & Jo-Ann Lawton this group is great for your local coffee shop and festival performance environments. Having had the chance to catch their act in the past I hope to hear them again soon and encourage you all to check them out — especially if you’re into the folk-acoustic sounds with meaningful lyrics.
The recording quality for a live show is quite impressive — something of a challenge for most recordings; however, this one proves successful.
When push comes to shove…you are right and I am wrong…
is one of my favorites with Life is full of lessons for the learnin’…the love I give will somehow be returnin’…
(Giving It Back, track 3) as a close second.
The music and vocals are well-polished and well thought out. You’ll find a little Celtic hidden in a few tunes and within acoustic variants. Although often folk music tell stories, histories/herstories and other cultural-social thematics, it is not easy to blend them with music that is attentive to the universal market — The Sirens have succeeded.
